Project

Tapel Lestari is currently involved in two important projects. The first of these is documenting Balinese masks in institutional, museum and private collections from around the world. It would begin this task on Bali photographing the extensive collection held by the Bali Museum in Denpasar.

Our second project is the publication of the first complete study of Balinese masks and mask traditions. Authored by noted mask dancer and scholar, Prof. I Made Bandem, and Indonesian art expert, Bruce W. Carpenter, it will discuss not only the nine living mask dance traditions on Bali but also their origin, history and current status. More than 300 historical masks from private and museum collections from around the world will illustrate the gallery section of the book. These include masks bequeathed by the likes of Walter Spies and other notables to the Bali Museum, as well as examples from the National and Wayang museum of Jakarta, Sono Budoyo and Radya Pusaka museums of Central Java and the Netherlands World Culture Museum. In addition a number of sacred masks still in use in various temples will also be included all beautiful photographed by Doddy Obenk, who has dedicated years to documenting Balinese dance traditions.
